New Studies Suggest Multiple Health Benefits for Caffeine

The saying, “wake up and smell the coffee” is usually expressed to deliver a dose of reality. But for millions, it also means indulgence and mental energy. Approximately two out of three American adults (66%) enjoy a cup of coffee daily, and nearly 195 million drink coffee every week, according to the Spring 2026 National Coffee Data Trends report from the National Coffee Association. Globally, people consume 2.25 billion cups of coffee every day.

It’s no surprise that people drink coffee for the caffeine, which energizes the brain and body for tackling the day ahead. However, there are other ways in which coffee (and its caffeine) may support health. Here are 5 recent findings from published studies exploring the benefits of caffeinated coffee.

1) Blood Sugar Regulation: It may appear counterintuitive, as the typical caffeine jolt can feel as though blood pressure has risen, but research has strongly suggested that moderate coffee consumption does not negatively affect blood pressure. In a meta-analysis of 13 published longitudinal studies involving 315,000 participants, 64,650 developed hypertension during the follow-up periods. The researchers concluded that there was no association between coffee consumption and the risk of hypertension.

2) Supports the Microbiota: Researchers found that coffee consumption lowered stress and improved mood by altering gut bacteria. Compared with those who drank decaffeinated coffee, participants consuming caffeinated coffee experienced better attention and alertness. Researchers observed an increase in Firmicutes, a genus of bacteria linked to positive emotions and improved mood in women. The study also identified specific bacteria that were more common in coffee drinkers. These individuals had higher levels of Eggertella and Cryptobacterium curtum, which are involved in bile acid metabolism and oral health, respectively.

3) Protects Brain Function: A large prospective cohort study found that individuals who consumed coffee (2 to 3 cups per day) or tea (1 to 2 cups) in moderation had an 18% lower risk of dementia and better cognitive performance over time. The researchers assessed data from 131,821 participants in the Nurses’ Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, who were followed for 43 years. Moderate coffee and tea drinkers also reported lower rates of subjective cognitive decline (7.8% versus 9.5% among  those who rarely consumed coffee or tea) and performed better on certain objective cognitive tests. Furthermore, these benefits were observed among individuals genetically predisposed to dementia. The researchers noted that caffeine may be an important contributor to the observed cognitive benefits.

4) Supports Healthy Heart Rhythm: A recent study found that drinking coffee daily may reduce the risk of atrial fibrillation (AFib) by 39%. Physicians commonly advise  patients with AFib, a heart rhythm disorder, to limit or avoid caffeine consumption. This study of 200 participants with AFib or atrial flutter compared AFib recurrence rates among  those who consumed at least 7 cups of coffee per week with those who abstained from coffee. In the primary analysis, recurrence of AFib or atrial flutter was lower among coffee drinkers (47%) than among those who abstained  (64%), resulting in a 39% reduction in risk.

5) Improves Athletic Performance. In 2021, the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) published its position stand on caffeine intake and exercise performance. Based on previously published studies, the organization concluded that caffeine, whether consumed as a supplements or in coffee, can improve muscular endurance, movement velocity and muscular strength, while also enhancing performance in sprinting, jumping, and throwing, and a wide range of aerobic and anaerobic sport-specific actions.

According to the position paper, caffeine is cognitively ergogenic in most individuals, enhancing attention and vigilance. It may also improve both cognitive function and physical performance in situations involving  sleep deprivation or poor sleep.

These are exciting areas in which caffeine may play a positive role in supporting health and performance. However, not everyone prefers to obtain their caffeine from coffee and may choose supplements to enhance cognitive performance.

The good news is that caffeine supplements are readily available, and consumer interest  in them appears to be growing. According to one study, approximately 4% of the general population uses caffeine supplements. Usage increases to more than 24% among endurance athletes, and up to 14% among students.

Energy drinks and pre-workout supplements containing caffeine have been demonstrated to enhance both anaerobic and aerobic performance.”
