Celebrating Senior Citizens Day

The ability to “grow old” is a blessing, considering the alternative.  Today’s seniors – traditionally defined as those aged 65 and older (though many now consider 55 the start of the first senior years) are a different breed  from previous generations. They look younger, they act younger, and feel younger.

No more rocking chairs on the porch at sunsets for today’s older generation! In 2025, a growing number of senior citizens are traveling, volunteering, working part-time, engaging in new sports and hobbies, and leading many family adventures.

Back in 1988, then President Ronald Reagan declared the second Sunday in August as National Senior Citizens Day. This year, it falls on, August 17. The day was created to honor and recognize our older generation, with the goal of raising awareness about the importance of improving their wellness and quality of life in all areas. It’s  also a  time to celebrate the achievements of our seniors, many of whom have made meaningful contributions  that have positively influenced  individuals, committees and even the planet.

And there are many ways to keep the spark of youth alive as the years pass by.

How to Age Well

Living each day to its fullest while practicing self-care and preservation is a commitment wort making. It doesn’t  have to be difficult; every journey of change and enlightenment begins with a single step.

Keep a journal.  Writing down goals, feelings,  experiences and daily events can help unburden the mind while sparking anticipation for the future. Other benefits of journaling for seniors include improved mental wellness,  emotional clarity, memory preservation, and engaging in cognitive exercises. It doesn’t have to be just words or sketches,  collaging with pictures and phrases  from periodicals and brochures, can add color, creativity and a greater sense of accomplishment.

Get regular checkups and screenings. As the body ages many biological processes slow and wear down. Silent threats  such as high cholesterol, cardiovascular plaque formation/arterial stiffening, chronic inflammation or cancer cell growth often develop without symptoms. Annual checkups with blood tests for fasting glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, thyroid function and more are imperative, for catching early trends such as a gradual rise in fasting glucose over the years. Cancer screenings like colonoscopies and mammograms should not be avoided and regular dental  and vision checkups remain key to overall health.

Get moving.  As we get older it becomes more difficult to be Physically fitness becomes more challenging with age, but even brisk 30-minute walk each day can significantly improve health and well-being. Walking boosts oxygenation, mood and metabolism; lowers blood pressure, strengthens bones and muscles and supports healthy  weight management. It also helps enhance sleep quality and duration. Learning and practicing yoga and tai chi can ease stress, enhance flexibility and improve muscle tone.

Supplement Thoughtfully. The right dietary supplements can make a world of difference in healthy aging.. Multivitamin-mineral complexes, fiber, omega-3 EFAs, and vitamin D are all very highly recommended to fill in nutritional gaps.

There are hundreds of supplements on the market,  many of which lack strong evidence for improving key aspects of wellness. Seniors should be mindful of the supplements they choose.

Supplements that protect immune function, reduce stress, improve sleep and support sustained energy throughout the day can be especially beneficial.  However, because many seniors take prescription medications, alongside  nutritional supplements, it is important to make sure that quality-of-life-enhancing supplements are convenient as well as efficacious.

This is where Nutriventia stands apart as an innovator in the nutraceutical ingredient technology space.
